Energy Markets and Weather Strategist

    • Brussels
  • Optimisation

Job description

Do you want to combine your expertise in weather with a strong interest in energy markets? In this role, you turn weather and market developments into insights that help optimize Luminus’ short-term energy portfolio. You build your own view, challenge forecasts and translate complex information into clear recommendations for short-term decision-making.

What you’ll do

  • You independently analyse and challenge weather, price and volume forecasts, combining internal forecasts with external data to identify short-term risks and opportunities.

  • By comparing weather scenarios and market behaviour, you assess their probability and potential impact, while you anticipate events such as wind ramps, cloud passages, fog, icing, cold spells and heatwaves.

  • You translate changes in temperature, wind and solar irradiance into concrete impacts on MW, renewable and thermal generation, consumption, prices and imbalances.

  • Working closely with the Short Term Optimizers, you turn your analysis into clear recommendations for the D to D+5 horizon, explaining scenarios, confidence levels and associated risks while challenging decisions constructively.

  • You review forecasts, decisions and actual outcomes on a daily basis, helping you identify deviations and opportunities to improve models, data, processes and future decision-making.

  • You connect Short Term Optimization, Forecasting and Data Intelligence by communicating your analyses clearly, defining relevant data requirements and sharing your knowledge with the teams involved.

What you bring

  • With a university degree in meteorology, climatology or a related field, or equivalent advanced expertise in atmospheric modelling, you have the scientific foundation needed for the role.

  • Your 1 to 3 years of experience in energy, utilities or commodities gives you a good understanding of gas and power markets, balancing and related mechanisms.

  • Strong programming and weather-data analysis skills enable you to work with large volumes of weather, energy and market data.

  • Your rigorous analytical mindset allows you to form an independent judgement, make decisions under uncertainty and translate complex information into clear conclusions.

  • Through clear communication and constructive assertiveness, you can challenge and influence stakeholders even when you have no direct managerial authority.

  • You are fluent in English and either French or Dutch; a good working knowledge of the second national language is preferred.

What you’ll get in return?

The energy sector is one of the most rewarding industries in Belgium with a highly rewarding compensation and benefits package:

  • Competitive compensation: Attractive salary with a performance-based bonus that can be optimized to your personal preferences, plus meal vouchers.

  • Insurance & social benefits: Group insurance and hospitalization coverage for the entire family. Additional reimbursement for healthcare and pharmaceutical costs.

  • Mobility: Full reimbursement for public transport, kilometer-based cycling reimbursement and flexible mobility choices: you can choose between a company car or mobility budget.

  • Internet & communication: Home internet covered, reimbursement for a personal mobile device with a phone subscription.

  • Home Office: A fully-equipped home office, including an ergonomical ICT set-up.

  • Exclusive discounts: 30% off gas and electricity after six months, discounts on energy-saving services (e.g., solar panels, heat pumps) and reduced prices on top brands, amusement parks, festivals and more.

  • This role gives you considerable autonomy to build an independent view of weather and market developments and directly support decisions affecting the short-term energy portfolio.

  • At the intersection of weather, energy markets and portfolio optimization, the position lets you develop into a cross-functional reference for translating weather events into physical and financial impacts.

  • You will work across Short Term Optimization, Forecasting, Data Intelligence, Generation and IT, with a Belgian focus and a strong European market dimension.

  • You work and connect with your colleagues at a Luminus office or from home. Need some flexibility? Your manager is open to discuss what works.
